Mixed Media. 6 X 24”. 2026
This series of six vertical wood panels draws from observations and photographs gathered during a recent journey through Japan. Combining layered cut paper, watercolor, digital image transfer, and carved text, the works explore the fragmented experience of moving through unfamiliar urban spaces at night.
Influenced by the compositional restraint and surface sensibility of Japanese woodblock printing, each panel isolates small architectural moments beneath expansive dark fields, evoking memory, distance, and quiet contemplation. Carved Japanese words and characters operate simultaneously as markers, textures, and partially obscured traces of place, reflecting the tension between recognition and translation.
Together, the panels function as intimate visual recollections — suspended between documentation and atmosphere, presence and disappearance.
