20 X 30. Mixed Media. 2025
Inspired by the medieval streets surrounding the cathedral quarter of Girona, this original mixed-media work merges photography, collage, and painterly surface techniques to explore themes of memory, history, and place.
Constructed through layered papers mounted on wood panel, the piece incorporates exposed watercolor passages, digital image transfers derived from the artist’s own photography, and distressed textural surfaces reminiscent of aged frescoes and medieval textiles. Fragments of pattern and erosion reference the celebrated Creation Tapestry of Girona, creating a dialogue between architecture, time, and material memory.
The narrow rising street draws the viewer toward the cathedral tower, while weathered surfaces suggest centuries of human presence embedded within the stone walls. Contemporary details coexist with ancient forms, emphasizing Girona as both a living city and a repository of layered histories.
Balancing realism with abstraction, the work transforms an observed urban scene into an archaeological surface — one that reveals traces of both construction and decay. Through collage, transfer, and exposed material process, the artist invites the viewer to experience the city not simply as landscape, but as layers of cultural memory.
